Eczema is a group of chronic inflammatory skin conditions causing dry, itchy, inflamed skin. Most common type is atopic dermatitis. Causes involve a combination: genetic predisposition affecting skin barrier, immune system dysregulation, environmental triggers, and skin microbiome imbalance. Family history often present.

Most eczema is a chronic condition. Well-controlled eczema is achievable for most patients; permanent cure is less common. Some children outgrow atopic dermatitis; others continue into adulthood. Contact dermatitis with an identifiable trigger may resolve completely with trigger avoidance.

When used appropriately, topical steroids are safe and effective. Appropriate use includes matched potency, limited courses for sensitive areas, gradual tapering, and thin layer application. Concerns arise primarily with inappropriate high-potency use without medical supervision.

Dupilumab (Dupixent) is a biologic medication targeting specific inflammatory pathways — IL-4 and IL-13. Approved for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in pediatric and adult patients. Administered as subcutaneous injection every 2 weeks. Produces substantial improvement in most appropriate patients.

Initial improvement typically visible within 2–4 weeks of appropriate treatment. Substantial improvement often at 8–12 weeks. Biologic treatments typically show improvement within 4–6 weeks.

Yes — pediatric eczema is a substantial part of our practice. Consultant dermatologists with pediatric dermatology expertise, age-appropriate treatment approaches, and family education central to every pediatric consultation.

Multiple potential triggers often specific to individuals: allergens (dust mites, pet dander, pollens, foods in some patients), irritants (soaps, detergents, fragrances), environmental factors (heat, humidity, dry air), stress, hormonal factors, infections, and sweat.

Complex relationship. Food allergies can trigger eczema in some patients, particularly pediatric patients with a clear temporal relationship. However, food allergies are less common than many patients believe. Restrictive diets without medical basis often produce nutritional problems without eczema improvement.

Most Dubai insurance plans cover medical eczema treatment with appropriate medical justification. Newer biologic treatments may require prior authorisation. We are direct-billing partners with seven major insurers and help patients navigate insurance authorisation.

Adult-onset eczema is increasingly recognised. Comprehensive workup identifies contributing factors. Treatment approach similar to childhood-persistent adult eczema. Newer biologic treatments particularly relevant for moderate-severe cases.

Established treatment for severe pediatric atopic dermatitis. A wet inner layer followed by a dry outer layer is applied over topical treatments and moisturisers, worn for hours or overnight. Enhances treatment penetration, provides a physical barrier against scratching, and cools inflamed skin. Family training is essential.

Substantially. Severe eczema associates with increased anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and social difficulties. Sleep disruption from itch has substantial mental health impact. Effective eczema treatment often improves mental health significantly.

Comprehensive allergen assessment includes clinical history, targeted patch testing for contact allergens, specific IgE testing, or skin prick testing in appropriate patients. Testing is targeted to clinical suspicion rather than comprehensive screening.

We have substantial expertise across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Particular considerations for darker skin: eczema may present differently, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a significant concern, and some treatments require calibration for darker skin.

Standard: initial consultation, follow-up at 4 weeks, then 8–12 weeks during treatment intensification. Once well-controlled, follow-up every 3–6 months. Biologic treatment patients require more frequent monitoring initially.

Chlorine can trigger or worsen eczema in susceptible patients. Strategies include pre-swim moisturiser application, immediate post-swim rinse and reapplication of moisturiser, avoiding pools during severe flares. Some patients tolerate swimming well with appropriate protection.

Selective usefulness. Antihistamines do not treat underlying inflammation. Sedating antihistamines can help sleep during flares by reducing itch-related awakening. Non-sedating antihistamines rarely help eczema itch directly.
